Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is loosely defined as pain that lasts for a month or more. The actual definition varies depending on individual medical authorities, but it generally refers to pain that continues to come back after the initial onset. With each separate case, the manifestation of chronic pain may be slightly different, but physicians have identified many different factors that can cause the condition. One of the most frequent is being overweight or having bad posture over a long duration of time. Other possible causes include incorrect lifting and carrying methods, an injury, sleeping on a bad bed, the natural aging process, wearing high heels for women, and birth defects like spine curvatures.

In addition to these known causes, there are also some degenerative diseases that can be responsible for chronic pain. Osteoporosis and rheumatiod arthritis are two common examples of these conditions and others could include multiple sclerosis, AIDS, cancer, stomach ulcers, or gallbladder disease. A person that has chronic pain in a certain area of their body will need to visit a doctor or physical therapy expert to determine the best course of treatment.

In general, there are two main ways to deal with chronic pain. One method is to use medications that lower the amount of pain that a person feels. While these will provide relief, they often do little to change the underlying issue that is behind the pain. Most experts agree that all medication use for chronic pain should be accompanied by a therapy program that gives exercise to the specific areas of the body where the pain is present. In this manner, a patient will be able to not only treat the pain symptoms, but may also be able to remove the entire problem. Physiotherapists and occupational therapists are the usual physicians that deal with these types of ailments.
