Dieting
When a person wants to lose weight or improve their overall health, one of the most common remedies taken is dieting. The idea of dieting is for a person to monitor and regulate their food intake to manage their weight. There are many different types of diets available to be used, ranging from reducing the caloric intake to changing the type of calories that are ingested. The choice of diets will largely depend on what the person has set as their goals and which diet will be most conducive to their lifestyle.
In general, a person should always visit a doctor before engaging in a diet to learn which diet will make the best fit. There are four main types, including low fat, low carbohydrate, low calorie, and very low calorie diets. The first group requires that a person lower the amount of fats that are consumed as part of their daily food intake, often with a special consideration towards the types of foods that should be eaten to replace the fat with healthy calories.
In opposition to the low fat diets, the low carbohydrate diets have recently become very popular. The theory of these low carbohydrate diets is that a person reduces all of the food that is difficult for the body to break down and digest, meaning that the diet mostly consists of proteins and simple vegetables. In this manner, the body’s metabolism is raised and can process the calories in a more efficient manner, thus reducing the overall weight of the person.
The last groups, low calorie and very low calorie diets, use the basic principle that the body will lose weight if it expends more calories than are ingested. In practice, these diets do work for short term weight loss, but they are essentially a form of starvation and cannot be maintained for long periods of time.
